Rock-N-Tot: Family-Friendly Fun coming to the DC Area

Thanks to Naomi and Liz for alerting CM to this fun event.

Announcing the newest family event to hit Washington DC, Rock-n-Tot is an afternoon dance party for kids (birth through 12) and their parents (or anyone who has a part in their lives).

Rock-n-Tot was co-created by an Ohio mom and a Maryland mom, in an effort to provide a wholesome event for the whole family, adults and kids alike. The simple premise of this event is to encourage families to spend quality time together, create new relationships and educate themselves with new products (most parent-created!).

Held on the 4th Saturday of each month from 2-5pm, beginning February 23, 2008, UltraBar (911 F Street NW, Washington DC) will be transformed into a kid-friendly zone. The dj plays great music (clean lyrics!) and you'll find bubbles, egg shakers and scarves are a-plenty. Discover face painting, airbrush tattoo artists, complimentary massages and other services for the adults, not to mention free juiceboxes and kid-appropriate snacks!

The founders of Rock-n-Tot have thought of everything - nursing zones, changing stations, even an area to just get away from it all and rejuvenate with toys, books, puzzles and more. Did we mention there are fantastic goody bags and giveaways?

Pre-walkers are admitted free, everyone else must have a ticket. $15/ticket.

For more info, or to purchase tickets: http://www.rock-n-tot.com

From Cookie Magazine: Nigella on Food and Kids

Ok, I admit it. I adore the Food Network, there is something seriously relaxing to me about listening to recipes and watching delicious ingredients blended together to make something tasty and fabulous. One of my favorite celebrity chefs is Nigella Lawson, the sassy British import with a flair for creating delciously easy recipes that always earn rave reviews.

On Sunday mornings at 10:30am EST, Nigella has a new show on Food Network, aptly titled, Nigella Express as a companion to her new cookbook that speaks to me as a mother with a rapidly increasing schedule to go with my growing bump. In this month's Cookie, Nigella talks about raising babies, a career and healthy eating habits.

My favorite line from the article is "There is no point in making something fast if it doesn't taste good." and I absolutely agree.

In our Holiday Stash: Baby Gifts from Baby Emi Jewelry

So, I know it's a little late or a little early, depending on which type of holiday shopper you are. I am the just after Halloween and before Thanksgiving type, but lately with so many friends having babies, myself included, I've had my eye on the baby goodies.

Debbie Savage and our friends at Baby Emi Jewelry have come out with some fabulous finds that I can't help, but lust after and know that will become welcome presents for our friends and family. Zenora and I have a matching set and I love the way the bracelet sparkles on her little wrist -- so cute and so fitting her little budding personality. My personal favorites are the Mommy and Me bracelet sets and the new Cambodian Jingle Bells bracelet, pictured to the right, which causes a pleasant jingling sound to following the cruisers. As an extra bonus, all the gifts from Baby Emi come beautifully wrapped and ready for presentation.

Finds from the Metropolitan Food and Entertaining Show: Kitsch'n Glam Aprons

Alright, I admit it. I'm kind of throw-back to the fifties on occasion. I love the smell of baking bread and treating my hubby to home-cooked meals. I collect cookbooks and read ettiquette guides, but I like to kick it up several knotches and I actually wear an apron while cooking because unlike the fifties, my day-to-day is alot more like run, rush, pause, repeat, especially with the growing bump and an almost two-year old in tow.

But this weekend, at the show, I found several treats which I will be posting about over the next few days. My favorite which I am wearing now is my new apron from Kitsch'n Glam, makers of swanky aprons in fun fabrics and great styles.

I figure that while the bump is growing I will accesorize anyway possible and bring bits of sparkle into everyday activities like making dinner.

What Z is reading now: Good Night Washington, DC

"Goodnight, Washington, DC. Night, night book. Goodnight, Lovely." is part of our nightly routine now. My daughter found this great little book at Olsson's near Dupont a few weeks ago and it has been come part of our routine.

We read and she loves the pictures of the monuments and the cherry blossoms and a really cute one of the justices. She loves the pictures of the boats in the Potomac and we use it as a teaching tool when we go out for walks around the Tidal Basin.

What is really neat about the series by Adam Gamble is that they tour the world through books. There is Goodnight Texas, Goodnight Boston and about 30 others with more coming in the upcoming months.

BBB- BusyBodyBook Organizer - a Treasure for Modern Mommies

Recently, I was introduced to a new organizer. I admit, I have seen and used my fair share of planner, but always find myself using envelopes, slips of scrap paper and other random things to keep myself organized. This one rocks.

It is made by About Your Time, LLC. It fits in my purse (huge feat!) There are pockets in the front and back to store bills, receipts and other random bits of goodness like my one-year old's attempts at drawing. There are tear-away "To-Do" Lists, places for notes and important phone numbers and spots designed for Doodles and random tidbits to yourself, which I love and find myself doing all the time. But the part, I really like, and use the most, is the grid where I can place all of our schedules on one page.

What can I say, you should try it out for yourself at http://www.busybodybook.com/ and test out the trial pages online, I'm sure that you will love it as I have come to.

Did you know that Ann Taylor Loft does Maternity?

Thanks to Peri with Metro Baby Slings for the fabulous tip.

I checked out the site today and how fun is that, especially since I am just getting to the stage where I can't fit into my pre-pregnancy staples. I find that a line that I normally dig is doing maternity wear. They do not have a very large selection, but they do have a nice range of staples, which Ann Taylor does beautifully.

About Well Woman Check-Ups and Pap Smears

Ladies, we are short-changing ourselves. We deserve better. Our children deserve better, and so do our loved ones. I know it is not a pleasant subject, the idea of stirrups and all, but it something that must be discussed and I promised myself that I would spread the word about Pap Smears as a part of your yearly Well Woman Check-Up.

What is a PAP SMEAR?
A pap smear is a test that checks the cells on the cervix, the opening of the uterus, for changes which could lead to cancer.

Why is a Pap Smear so IMPORTANT?
Some women who have cervical cancer may not have any symptoms, and regular pap smears can detect changes in the cervix and enable prevention and early treatment.

How often should I get a Pap Smear?
For most women, yearly is fine, but talk to your doctor about your individual situation.

Are these tests expensive?
Yearly pap smears are covered by most insurance carriers 100% or for the cost of your co-pay, but there are other options such as your county health clinic and your local Planned Parenthood offers routine women's health screenings and related services at an income-sensitive rate or sometimes even free for uninsured women.

Need a women's health and anatomy tutorial?
You know, it's been a long time since high school health and all the technical jargon sometimes makes things more complicated. See the link attached for a quick tutorial and a means to arm yourself with information, http://www.plannedparenthood.org/sexual-health/women-health/gyn-exams.htm

Mommy Jewelry - Done right! (The Fine Art of Family)

Who doesn't love Mommy jewelry... especially when it is done right. The other day Capitol Moms was introduced to a particularly beautiful line by Monica Rich Kosann, noted photographer and maker of classically, swanky modern day heirlooms.

She features lovely lockets, photocases and beautiful museum quality pieces that I haven't found anywhere else. The pieces are made of sterling silver or 18K gold on slim luxurious chains or a casual black silk cord. Right now, I'm wearing the image case with a rockin' picture of my Z and have received several compliments over the last couple of days. It looks great with jeans and tee or with a bright summery dress.

I recommend checking out their site, if only for the fabulous photography. I'm sure, like me, you'll find a piece that will bring a smile to your lips. Monica's line is featured at http://www.thefineartoffamily.com/ and line ranges from $150 and up and is loved by celebs like Katie Holmes and Madonna and local mommas alike.

Spotlight on Blessence Maternity: Lovin' the Belly

This last couple of weeks, Capitol Moms has been scouting and scouring the internet and local area for new, fun things to feature on the blog and site. In our travels, we ran across a fabulous line of maternity-tees by Blessence Maternity.

These shirts send a powerfully sweet message of love and of blessings for the baby-carrying belly. You can find the adorable line at http://www.blessencematernity.com/ . I asked founder, Shaelyn Werner a couple of questions about perks and me-time and these are her responses.

What do you consider the perks of motherhood to be? "Motherhood is the most rewarding experience of my life. It brings out the best in me as a person. The best part of being a mom is getting to learn about my children's personalities, habits, likes and dislikes and when they tell you 'I love you' when you were not expecting it. They never cease to amaze me."

How do you spend and define "me-time"? "I cuddle up to my husband on the couch and watch a movie or go get a pedicure while reading a good book. All moms need a time to recharge away from the kids."

GIVEAWAY: A Woman's Worth - Book with a message -

Recently, I finished reading a wonderful book called A Woman's Worth by Marianne Williamson, the creator of the inspirational series "Touched by an Angel". The book touched my heart and I know that other women should hear the message that this book speaks of.

It speaks to the fact that our worth as women is not defined by the society that we live in, though it longs to shape our perspective, but rather as our inate quality of being a woman. We are powerful, gentle and strong at the same time. We are mothers, warriors and pioneers... that by the very virtue of being a woman we are gifted with the honor of being co-creators in this world and that we should not take our gifts lightly, but share them with world around us, not like war-lords demanding that men bow down and worship us, but rather with grace and honor, like a queen successfully ruling her domain.

My mother shared this book with me and Capitol Moms will share this book with the first 5 readers that email me at teia@capitolmoms.org. For anyone wanting to purchase this book, it is available at http://www.amazon.com/.

Join Rep. Maloney to Host Capitol Hill "Nurse-In"

A Cool Post from DC Baby:

May 10: Rep. Maloney to host Capitol Hill “Nurse-In” with local moms

Are you an advocate for breastfeeding and women’s rights? If so, you might be interested in this news out of U.S. Rep. Carolyn Maloney’s (D-NY) office: She’s hosting a Capitol Hill “Nurse-In” on Thursday, May 10 to reintroduce the Breastfeeding Promotion Act to Congress. It will be held from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. in the Cannon Terrace, New Jersey and Independence Ave. SE on Capitol Hill, and all local moms are welcome. The proposed legislation would protect the rights of nursing mothers who return to the workplace after having a baby, by amending the Civil Rights Act of 1964 with a new clause. The bill would also provide tax incentives for businesses that establish private lactation areas in the workplace, allows families to deduct all breastfeeding pumps and equipment from their taxes, and would provide a performance standard for breast pumps. For more details on the “Nurse-In,” contact Rep. Maloney’s office at 202.225.7944

Girls' Night Out: Lunafest to benefit local outreach of Postpartum Support International

Worthy cause alert! Mommy's Night Out Alert!

Hey, two alerts all wrapped in the nice, neat package that is the 6th Annual Lunafest Film Festival at the Arlington Cinema Draft House on April 11, 2006. Tickets are $10. Here is the post from DC Baby.

The Sixth Annual Lunafest Film Festival DC (featuring films made by...for...about women), set for Wednesday, April 11 at the Arlington Cinema & Draft House, will raise funds for a very special cause that helps local pregnant women & new moms... and is dear to my own heart.

This year, net proceeds of Lunafest go to Postpartum Support International (PSI) - a worldwide network of volunteers, advocates, and professionals who care about the emotional health of expectant and new moms.

I volunteer locally with PSI as the DC-Area Coordinator, along with local mama Adrienne Griffen, who is the Virginia Coordinator. Together, Adrienne and I lead the free DC Peer Support Group, which meets two evenings each month NW DC, geared toward women experiencing depression, anxiety, or stress before or after having a baby. (Adrienne also leads a daytime Peer Support Group that meets twice a month in Arlington, and there are additional groups in Loudon County and Fairfax, VA.)

The need is almost overwhelming in the DC area for information, emotional support, and simple empathy and kindness. There are many women reaching out for help each day, and sadly, many more who can't or don't. Those of us doing PSI's work in the Washington area are volunteering our time. We don't get paid, and we don't get a stipend to produce materials. But fundraisers like Lunafest can offset costs associated with designing and copying brochures that can be distributed to women at doctor's offices, special events, and moms' clubs, letting them know that they are not alone and help IS available.

I hope some of my readers will turn out for this fun "girls' night out" at Lunafest, to watch some cool independent films and contribute to a worthy cause. Tix are $10 at the door. The evening will start at 6 p.m. with live jazz music and wine tasting, and the movies start at 7:30.

Saphia Waters: Helping Mommies get more water

In flavors like Lovingly Lemon, Bliss Berry and Pacifyingly Peach, Saphia Waters offer pregnant and nursing mothers another alternative to everyday water. They are fortified with nutrients that a mother's body needs to work like the fabulous baby-making machine that she is. Think of it as a supplement to your prenatal vitamins, not a replacement. It is endorsed by the American Pregnancy Association and received some neat press from the Today Show and the Hot Moms Club.

At first, I was a bit skeptical, but they don't taste bad. I had a couple of friends come by to try too and they dug them too. Not bad for a days work. :-)

Saphia Waters are available online at www.saphiawater.com and in store at local Babies R Us and Motherhood Maternity stores.

Couture Invito - Bringing a little life to everyday paper

Ok, I love pictures and stationary, particularly shades of pink, coral and sunny yellows. I think that it is so nice to something beautiful come in the mail that tends to be so blah.

Just recently, we were introduced to Alesa and the fabulous folks at Couture Invito. They specialize in fabulous paper products and unique photo gifts that are lovely and beautifully done. Upon Alesa's recommendation, I ordered the photopads, like the ones to the right. And I have to say that they look even more awesome in person. I used a pic of my family on the boardwalk in Anapolis. It turned out really nice and I use my pad at work. Suprisingly, people notice the papers that you write on and I started getting so many compliments on the note pad.

I think that it will be a wonderful Mother's Day present or a sweet gift to present to a new mommy. And as a special for Mother's Day the photopads are on sale, how cool is that.

Check them out at www.coutureinvito.com or click on the photo to the right.

Pink Bowtique - Glamour for Little Girls

As some might know, my Z has a puff. An adorable near-afro puff of springy black curls and I love to doll her up with ribbons and bows, but I have to admit, some bows have met a tragic fate at the hands of my lovely one-year old. She can cause some serious fabric fraying and can make something about bows just not sit right on the little clippy.

Well we just received some bows from Pink Bowtique and they have survived my Zettle-Z. When the package came in the mail, my hubby opened them up and said, "Oh, these are cute." and that's alot coming from the man that believes pink is a semi-nauseating color. And they are cute, well-made, the ends are heat sealed, so no fraying, and don't fall off the band.

These, headband bows, are on my list of gifts for mommies of little girls.

Stroller Strides - Try a class

The other afternoon on Yummy Mummy, they featured a stroller class and now that Z is out of the sling and carrier and a full-time stroller baby, I thought that this would be something cool to look into.

So I got in the google mode and found Stroller Strides, and by the look of things, lots of other area Mommies have gotten the word about stroller fitness, there are 12 different locations just in the DC area -- everywhere from Arlington to Union Station to Gaithersburg. Also, also on their really user-friendly site, is a really neat deal. Try a free class, usually single classes run $15, but they are offering this program to get the word out and let women try it out.

My Z and I just signed up and we will try one of the upcoming Saturday classes, probably at the Union Station location. We'll write an update and let y'all know how it all comes out.

Stork Magazine and Runway Moms

While I was pregnant with my Z, I loved catching Runway Moms on Discovery Health. Runway Moms is a 30-minute show telling the story of Expecting Models, an agency specializing in pregnant and nursing models, by profiling a model mom-to-be through her pregnancy and into the early days of life at home. It was such fun and a great way to learn tips and tidbits while being wonderfully entertained.

Now, Runway Moms is just starting season 2 and it's full of great new stories. But Liza at Expecting Models has a great new baby as well, Stork Magazine, a fun e-zine that supplements Runway Moms, with great info and fabulous mom-prenuer profiles (see section Moms We Love).

Mommy and Me at the Movies - Arlington Cinema and Drafthouse

DC Baby has just posted something fabulous for Mommies in the area. Arlington Cinema and Drafthouse on Columbia Pike has started a new Mommy and Me series starting March 6. Tickets run about $5.50 for movies about a month off of other theatres.

Also on Monday, 2/12, they are showing a special feature of Charlotte's Web at 4:30pm for $1 admission.

Diaper Baggies: Controling the Funk One Diaper at a time

Through our search for fabulous mom-prenuers, Capitol Moms came to meet one fabulous Tasha Collier of Diaper Baggies. She has come up with this oh-so-needed funk controlling idea, a stinky diaper bag with a zip top and opague color that really controls the terrific odor that little ones can cook up while disguising the contents.

And after about a week of using them, I can say that they really work! They can control the funk that my Huggies size 4 Z can cook up (who knew that little turds could stink so much) and look cute while doing it.

Try them out, you can order a free sample of Diaper Baggies at www.diaperbaggies.com and full-size packs of 40 at HappiBaby.com.

momAgenda: Planners for the Busy Mommy

Today something fabulous came in the mail, a beautiful, fushia pink day planner. When I opened the package, I squealed with delight. My hubby looked at it and just grinned.

It is cute, feminine and practical. It's covered in this really delicious stain resistant fabric in colors that you just don't find everywhere. It is a momAgenda, a planner designed just for the busy mommies of the world, just like us.

There are places to jot notes to yourself, planning playdates, supper, and all the other little things that pop up in your universe. There are addresses to fun websites, the numbers to the major airlines (something that I am always looking for at the most in-opportune times), and a re-fillable section called MomEssentials where you can put phone numbers, addresses and important dates, like your best friend's new baby's birthday.

It's just pretty enough that I will want to use it everyday. For more products, to see who else loves their momAgenda like Felicity Huffman and Real Simple Magazine and to get exclusive deals and promotions, check out their site at www.momagenda.com

Livie and Luca: Stepping in Style

Recently Capitol Moms was contacted by a fellow local mom-prenuer. She is Amie Garcia of Livie and Luca, a shoe company specializing in European style footwear for kiddies. They are housed here in Arlington and Z and I went to the site to see what the buzz is all about...what we found was simply adorable. "Adorable shoes for adorable feet" really fits. Great colors, simple, fun styling and a user-friendly site.

The sweet pair pictured to the right are Emma's red tassles, seemed to catch my Z's curious eye. There are about twelve different styles, everything from a fabulous little Brown Elephant to a cute Viva Futbol in tan or red, and they come in sizes 3.5 to 10. So you are sure to find pair to fit your little one.

There are several ways to order: online at www.livieandluca.com, by phone, 1-800 LIV.LUCA or by hosting a shoe party. Check the site for more details.

Little treats from Shoebox Ovens

The other day through Daily Candy, we discovered a wonderful little bakery, Shoebox Ovens, "a very merry little bakery" here in Arlington. The bakery is run by the fabulous Krishna and they specialize in unique, baked-to-order goodies that you just will not anywhere else.

I ordered the Canales. They remind me of little, bite-sized creme brulees that you don't need a spoon for. The burnt sugar crust and creamy middle... yum!!! And my food lovin' hubby agreed. Seriously addictive.

Check out her site, www.shoeboxovens.com It's beautiful, the only way to order, the pictures are lovely and accurate. The goodies look just as good when they arrive to you as they do in the picture.
