Looking for other fabulous mom-prenuers to feature

In the upcoming weeks, Capitol Moms will be launching our new site and we are looking forward to some new fun features and events in the near future.

Right now, we are looking for other mom-prenuers and ladies doing fabulous things to feature and get the word out.

I, personally, believe that women need other women and resources to help make the road a little more pleasurable and the work a little more fun. But in the same vein, I believe that resources, like really good friends, are sometimes hard to find, so share the love and let us know of the good things, services and people that help make your life little easier.

A neat find in DC - Dragonfly Design and Decor

One day while we were walking to the Whole Foods at 14 and P, NW. We stumbled upon a treasure in Washington, DC. Dragonfly Design and Decor. From the street, I saw something beautiful shimmering in the back of the warehouse. We went in manuevered around luxe Asian inspired prints and screens, decorative goodies, jade bracelets and other things that passed my vision on my way to the shimmer.

The shimmer was a fiery red silk kimono. No pictures were available, but let me tell you, the fabric felt so luxurious and smooth against my skin and reminded me of a treat that I hadn't indulged in since before the birth of my daughter. It was worth the journey in.

Nonetheless, they have a beautiful warehouse in DC and one soon to be opening in Fairfax on the 20th of January.

Their site is www.dragonflydd.com. and the DC location is at 1457 Church St. NW.

Loving Mama Love and Pasley Place Photography

A couple of weeks ago, my husband, daughter and I attended a gallery closing after reading an intriguing article in the City Paper. There we discovered Mama Love.

Soon to be a book featuring DC area mothers and their babies. The picture to the left is just one of the shots from the book. Beautiful, right?

Amazing how one picture really can be worth a thousand words. For more information and for details on how to get your own portraits with the Mama Love look, check out her site at http://pasleyplace.com

Just a note... a reminder

As the holiday shopping season blows in at full force, I wanted to post a bit about taking a breath and enjoying this season with its beautiful and suprisingly warm weather. We are so busy, hustling from store to store that it is so easy to miss the meaning of this season with its new birth and the start of a new season and a brand new year.

Find lovely products that let you treat yourself in a few spare minutes. What I am really enjoying right now is Vosges Haut Chocolates. I find them locally at the Curious Grape in Shirlington, but they have a beautiful site, www.vosgeschocolate.com with lovely blurbs about each chocolate. It's like taking a trip with each exotic bite. I adore the slightly sweet and salty taste of the Gogi Chocolate bar and the spicy heat of the Red Fire Bar. Try several and pick your favorite.

Miss Lucy Lion at Karibu Books in Bowie

Too cute!!! A Lion's Grocery List is a wonderful little treat that we discovered while at this year's Green Festival at Verizon Center.

A Lion's Grocery List is a music cd, made a local DC teacher, that uses unusual instruments and funky beats to reinforce educational concepts in young children.

My little one likes Ritmo Latino, but the title song is really cute too. Check them out a www.pqkids.com

Also, if you are in the Bowie area, go see Miss Lucy Lion in person at Karibu Books, Bowie Town Center
15624 Emerald Way, Bowie, MD on December 16, at 11:00 AM.

Messy Baby alert -- Chic and Clean Coverall to the rescue

If your little one is anything like mine, the "I can do it myself" phase is the messiest one yet. We spend more time picking up random bits of pasta sauce, gooey crushed Oreos and mushed up Cheerios off the floor, her clothes and out from under other unlikely places. Local Moms Michele and Jennifer have come up with a solution, the Chic and Clean coverall.

It is a snap closure coverall that will make cleaning up after a self-feeding adventure a snap. It is washable, comes in lots of fun colors and makes a neat present for any mom with little ones running about.

Check them out at http://chictots.com Also as a special bonus for Capitol Moms readers, they are overing 15% off and free shipping now through December 31. Just enter "capmoms" in the promotions/coupon code section to redeem your discount. While you are at their site, be sure to check out the slings and other goodies to be arriving soon.

Happy Holidays!!!

After a much needed semi-sabbatical, we at Capitol Moms are back and looking forward to a blessed holiday season and a fabulously new and event-filled year.

Precious little girl totes and a discount for Capitol Moms readers

Local DC Area mom Laura Reece has stumbled onto something fabulous. Heirloom quality products, beautiful embroidery and unique details make Laura's products at The Silken Thread something better than the ordinary.

While reading the site, I saw the most adorable little girl totes pictured to the right and a precious tooth fairy pillow that I cannot wait for Zenora to get to use (granted it will be a while, but the tote will be put to good use)

Check out the site at www.thesilkenthread.com and place "CAPITOLMOMS" in the comment box when placing an order and receive a 10% discount, how fun is that?

Connecting Moms... so much fun

There is this new online group that I want to share with y'all. It's called Connecting Moms. I've been a member for a few months now and I love the connections that I have made. I've met local moms, moms from my old hometown and enjoyed getting to know other people on my own time table.

What I also love about the group is meeting other mom-preneurs and getting motivation from other women like me, but there is so much more that I am still discovering like the raffles, the online-diary, mom-messages, raves and reviews of products. In a word, it rocks. Click on the link above or check out the website, www.connectingmoms.com

November is National Novel Writing Month

For a long time now, I have been considering myself as a freelance writer and as an aspiring, yet unpublished novelist, but as life has progressed, writing my own great American novel has become increasingly more difficult and since the birth of my daughter, my writing has dropped down to nill.

A little birdie dropped a challenge in my ear, November is National Novel Writing Month. It is a world-wide challenge to all of us wanna-be published authors that cannot seem to turn off their inner-editor and sometimes inner-critic. It a challenge to get that novel finished and have an online support network to help you along. While you're there, if you are so inclined, check out the programs that this group is involved in. You can join us at the National Novel Writing Month's website, www.nanowrimo.org

Red Envelope Halloween

I saw the most adorable pea in a pod costume in the recent Red Envelope catalog. I'm not even much of a Halloween person, but the costume was adorable.

Tea and rainy day activities

How to gain at least five minutes of mommy-time: crayons and coloring sheets.

My years as a teacher have taught me several valuable lessons, the least of which is be prepared; it's always nice to have things on hand to do swift games, easy snacks and fun kid-friendly activities.

On these rainy, ify weather days, I whip out my craft bin and lay it out for the kids to play with. Celestial Seasonings has a cute link on their site. So on a rainy day, toss some crayons to the youngins' , sip a cup of tea and print out some coloring sheets for the kids.

Have your cake and eat it too!

Do you love homemade cake? I do. And I've found a place that makes rich, buttery cakes in an assortment of flavors in a chic environment. Washington, D.C.'s own Cake Love.

My personal favorite is the Strawbery Shortcake. It is a buttery vanilla cake layered with fresh strawberries and sweetened whipped cream. They give a nice big slice and it's seriously yummy!!!

What is cool about Love Cafe, the trendy cafe version of cakelove, is that you can sit, have your cake and nice cup of coffee or tea or chicken salad sandwich and feel like you have just treated yourself to something delicious.

There are a couple of locations around the area, one in DC at 1501 U street and the other in Silver Spring.

Cute Stuff from Children's Place

Recently, my little girl was gifted with the some really adorable threads from the Children's Place .
She received a great cardigan with bright embroidered flowers and a hoodie to match a little girl yoga outfit. What I have to say most is that I love the generous cut and quality of the clothes. They have survived my washing abilities and still look great.

The Children's Place has a great email list that sends out fun perks and several local locations. Even better news, is a good sale and one is on right now. Check them out at www.childrensplace.com

Saucy, saucy and bit of inner sexy too

As a still nursing new mom, sometimes its a little easy (probably easier than I like to admit) to feel a little less than fabulous and more like a walking milk machine. You know that semi-frumpy feeling.

I was needing a little spice, a dash of sass and more than a little touch with my inner kitten. Some where between wife and mother and all around supermom, I had lost some of that pizzazz that I was known for. Then I saw it at Barnes and Noble, Sheila Kelley's The S Factor, Strip Workouts for Every Woman. It seemed a little naughty, a bit impractical, a little racy, and just like what I was looking for. Something just for me, something sexy and something personal.

I have been doing the workouts, minus the pole work in the safety of my own living room for about a month and half now and I have seen a difference. I'm not real consistent with my workout length, sometimes its fifteen minutes, and other times, I have the luxury of a full thirty minutes. But it works. And I would recommend it to anyone looking for a little sass and a little saucy break in a day filled with naps and rice cereal.

Check out their site, www.sfactor.com. It is full of tips, encouragement, and makes for a little extra fun. You can also purchase the book on site too. Because at the heart of every mother is a woman in need of a little personal pleasure.

Simply Adorable

Today, I was scanning the web for fabulous baby finds and I stumbled upon some of the most adorable baby jewelry. Baby Emi Jewelry. Beautiful, little bracelets for beautiful little girls.

It is the first time that I have lusted for jewels for my Z. Sterling silver, Swarovski crystals, semi-precious stones, pearls and glass beads. Ah, adorable. The site labels them as "glamour for pint-sized people" and if the pictures are any indicator, that is so right.

Check them out at the link above.

DC Baby - a great resource for this area

In this resource-laden area, it's comforting to know that there are some geared to the needs of parents in this area. Recently, I was refered to an awesome site, DC Baby

It is packed chock full of resources, tips and local kid friendly events. Written by fellow ex-Texan and DC area transplant Sarah Masterson, DC Baby is a site and accompanying book that you are sure to love.

PS... be sure to check out the summer shopper section. (Because who doesn't love a good deal?)

Treat yourself

Last year at an Urban Divas event, I was pleasantly surprised to find a local crafter of beautiful, unique jewelry. I found the most beautiful pair of beaded pearl earrings made by bakana. They sparkle and shine and add a touch of elegance to just about any outfit, which is a special treat to a new mom.

I have received dozen of compliments on them and know that you will love their quality, beauty and timeless sort of style.

The Great Diaper Challenge

Okay Moms, I'm on a quest for the best diaper in America. Right now, we are on size 4 Luvs. They are relatively cute, thin (which is nice for the summer - not so much super sweaty butt), have a nice Blue's Clues motif, a blue leakproof core that really works, fit nicely around her little chubby thighs and are reasonably priced. $10.99 at Target. They have a "Love them or your money back" guarentee.

They have survived the stinky poop, kept the poop from coming up the back and even worked pretty nicely under clothes. The only complaint is that the tabs stick. They are kind of hard to get pulled out and fastened to the cloth-like tab holder.

But I would still say that in the whole grand scheme of diapers, they are minor super-stars in our book.

Check them out at www.luvs.com

Kindess is ....

This weekend, my family did something a little different than our normal Sunday routine. We attended a different church, ate at a brand-new resturaunt and went on a all together new adventure, half-way hoping to find something different than we saw every other Sunday. After church, we saw this man. His eyes shone with happiness even though his dress showed he had seen better days. He took a moment to greet us with a smile and a kind word. It did more for my day than most other events.

What I found is that goodwill is all around and sometimes the most unexpected circumstances test what we're made of and eventually bring even greater joy into your life.

To Nurse or Not to Nurse....

In this month's BabyTalk Magazine, www.babytalk.com , there is an interesting article about breastfeeding. It discusses the reasons why mothers don't breastfeed longer and interesting statistics that might be fascinating reading for other mothers (and people in general).

In my case, I have been blessed to have support for this gift in my home and social circles, but other moms aren't so lucky. Below are some tools that I have found helpful in my quest to successfully nurse my daughter.

1. A great comfortable nursing bra. The anytime bralet from Bella Materna is my bra of choice. It is comfy, quick drying and fabulous. www.bellamaterna.com

2. An easy breast pump. I use the manual pump from Medela. It is easy to use, highly portable and easy to clean. www.selfexpressions.com

3. A great coverup. I use a luscious teal blue paisley silk poncho that I got from Mimi Maternity. I know after you have the baby, you want nothing to do with maternity clothes, but this is an awesome piece that works while pregnant, into transition and after. www.mimimaternity.com

Kiddie tables at a great price

The other day Z and I made a trip to the mega-giant IKEA. It was a daunting experience that I was kind of avoiding, but I was pleasantly suprised. It was so much fun!

Even though there were a truckload or three of people there (we went on Saturday morning), it was a great experience. There is a baby room with comfy chairs for nursing, a light with dimmer, a changing table, a little table for other little ones that might be just plain running out of steam and even diapers, in case you forget. There is also an impressive snack bar that serves everything from Swedish meatballs to poached salmom with asparagus and new potatoes and little jars of baby food.

While we were there I found some of the most adorable European inspired little things including this children's bedside table that is pictured above. It is part of the Mammut collection and retails for $24.99, comes in red and blue and has matching chairs that retail for $14.99 each.

Spreading Post Day 1

Yesterday's exercise in spreading the love went well. It was a hot day here in Washington and we went out to Alexandria to do a little shopping in the heat. Needless to say, the adventure was short lived. We also took the time to spread the love to five people and I have to admit. It made our day go better and the smiles that we were given made the heat seem not so bad.

Spread the Love

Have you seen the insurance commercial where people do little things that make another person's day better? One man hands a girl her doll, another lets a man in to the busy traffic ahead of him -- each character does some a little something to spread the love and puts a little extra goodness into the world.

I have made a pact with myself to try a little experiment and actively this week attempt to spread the love and give a little good in five ways each day for the next seven days.

In addition to the regular Capitol Moms entries, there will also be a report of my daily progress. Also, I challenge each and every person that reads this blog to take this challenge along with me.

Happy spreadin' the love adventures -

Mama T

Handy Crafts

Lately through all the rain and humid heat, time indoors has become a luxurious necessity. One craft that we have started is a hand print album. Each month we trace our hands and take a picture to place side by side in a hand made album. Then each print can be decorated with stickers, sparkleys and other bright goodies. It makes for a neat keepsake and can easily be turned into cards and other gifts in the time it takes for the glue to dry.

Carters Baby at Bailey's Crossroads

Today I found an unexpected treat while hunting for deals in Bailey's Crossroads. Deals out the wazoo at the Carters baby and childwear store near La Madeline! There are wonderful finds at $5, $7 and $10. Fabulously easy tagless summer dressing for the price of a Starbucks Coffee and a muffin, all I have to say is bring on the sales. Check out their site, https://www.carters.com , to find a store near you or to shop at on-line. Be sure to join their celebration club for coupons and other treats.

Choo...choo...

Traveling by train sounds like a novel idea made romantic by the classic movie White Christmas, but it is really a relaxing, fabulously modern way to travel with an infant. Here I'll list the four tips that made our trip go more smoothly.

1. Think light. Don't pack the fridge, just the necessary goodies.
2. Take snacks. While there is a snack car, it may be way at the other end of the train.
3. Take a sweater, blanket for baby and reading material. Freezing while bored is no fun.
4. Enjoy the view. Train travel is a scenic way to travel why not enjoy the sights.

Also, another bonus is children under two travel free on Amtrak trains and older children can travel at reduced rates. www.amtrak.com

Perks of Motherhood...

As the Capitol Moms Launch party is in the planning stages, I was sitting and thinking of the perks of motherhood, aside from the sweet pleasure of having your baby look up at you with a giddy, gummy smile. What are some of the products, trends, events, pleasures and treats that you enjoy more as a mother than you did before, in your pre-baby life? What would you take pleasure in, if it were offered?

As they come to mind, we'll post and find a way to incorporate it into the Launch party mix. If you have any suggestions, feel free to post or email us at CapitolMoms@yahoo.com

Bling-bling purse/diaper bag

I have been on a personal search for a bag that can function as both a purse and diaperbag. Currently, I am using a black Nine West Hobo Tote and it works well, but I want something summery, durable, with a bling-bling, a little sparkle action going on. It has to be versatile and able to survive a little spilled milk.

Any suggestions?

Building Little Einsteins

I don't remember educational television being so high-tech. On Playhouse Disney, a block of hours on the Disney Channel dedicated to pre-schoolers, there is one show that I adore - Little Einsteins. It is a liberal arts education stripped down to its raw elements in a fun way for pre-schoolers (and the people that love them too), minus the scary puppets that some shows use. http://disney.go.com/disneychannel/playhouse/littleeinsteins/index.htm

Sleep Deprived and Loopy

Waking up at 3am, 5am and 7am to big brown eyes and a just barely toothless smile is making life very interesting. I'm finding an odd pleasure in the wee hours of the morning. It's amazing what you can see while the rest of the world sleeps. I find that my own schedule is rotating, in a manner of speaking. In my late night adventures, I have found some really neat sites that you might enjoy.

Loving Glen Echo Park

There are so many free and educational events in the DC area that it would take me hours to list all the cool ones, but some thing fun and easy to do is to visit the Smithsonians on the Mall or one of the smaller less-touristy one of the sites ran by the National Park Service, one of particular interest is Maryland's Glen Echo Park. It is a fabulous, old-style amusement park with a working carousel. It is really like taking a slice of good-ole fashion apple-pie and a slice of cheddar cheese on it. http://www.nps.gov/glec/

1,2,3 Supermom to the rescue

With a rapidly growing 5 month old, a husband, household responsibilities and other things to consider, sometimes the best thing you can do is just take a 7 minute breather to get your head, thoughts, the to-do list and attitude in order. I have found The Game of Life and How to Play It by Florence Scovel Shinn, http://www.amazon.com, an excellent tool at helping me do just that, figure out the game, tap into my inate power, recharge and return to my current role of Supermom to the rescue.

Sunny babies

As summer creeps in and the temperature (and here- humidity rises), I'm always on the lookout for cute headgear and beach worthy-wear. For Z, I've found a cute little bucket sun hat with ties at my local Target made by Wee Wave. It is precious. They have several colors and patterns for boys and girls. I chose a bright pink bucket to match her already heavily-pink wardrobe. Now, I'm on the search for another and I think I may have found her next hat at One Step Ahead,

Hunting for Fabulous Childwear Stores

Ladies,

Capitol Moms is on a search for the cutest babywear and babygear in the area. There are some really neat stores in the area and we want to celebrate them. As we find them we will be posting pictures, reviews and neat findings.

If there are any stores and boutiques in your area that you would like to see celebrated on Capitol Moms, post a comment or drop me a line at capitolmoms@yahoo.com.

Calling DC Area Moms

Welcome to Capitol Moms!!!!

I am excited to introduce a new place for Moms in the DC area to meet, be social and enjoy some of the perks of motherhood.

As a new mom, to a beautful baby girl, I have been searching for a way be social, meet other moms, get-out-and-about and enjoy some of the goodies that I enjoyed pre-baby in a way that is mom and baby friendly.

Suprisingly, in an area so rich and full of amusement for all, it has been pretty hard to find what I've been looking for and thus the birth of Capitol Moms.

There will be randomness, chit-chat, trend-spotting, lots of variety and fun to be had. There will be events, a couple of times a month, to get you out of the house and mingling in a place where you and your child are welcome and sure to have a good time.

Welcome to Capitol Moms.
